The Death of the 30 Second YouTube Ad: Huzzah!

By Codi Schneider | @codisch

What a time to be an avid YouTuber! Finally the site will be removing unskippable 30-second ads.  There is no set date just yet, but we will see the transition in 2018.  Google have said that they want YouTubers to have the best viewing and streaming experience possible. YouTube will still have 15 and 20-second ads and will replace the 30-second unskippable ads with 6-second bumper ads.

We’re not totally out of the ad sphere yet, but it’s a step in the right direction.  The 30-second ads are considered to be a thing of the past.  Google is looking to completely makeover advertising for YouTube by making the ads shorter and more interactive.

Of course nothing happens without criticism. Many have pointed to YouTube revenue earned from advertising placed on unlicensed content.  YouTube has had to fight continual claims of using unlicensed content to make money. But they continue to assert that they have been a benefit to the music industry, pointing out that they have paid out over a billion dollars to the industry in 2016.

Some think the ads are effective, especially the short, upcoming movie ads.  We can all agree that the 30-second unskippable ads getting removed is a step in the right direction.  The ads do keep the company moving forward and make it possible for us to view our favorite videos for free.
