Twitter Says Bye to Blue, Scraps Blue Dot Notifications in Moments

Users were quite irritated by the blue dot notification in Twitter's Moments, and the company scrapped it about a week after its introduction.

 

Users really, really, really don't like it when you make changes to features. Twitter is the latest social media tool to incur the wrath of its users when it added Moments, a feature that lets you see tweets and information related to a specific event, like a breaking news story or a sporting event.

To engage Moments, you can click on the tab with the icon -- it's accessible both from the desktop version of Twitter and the mobile app. But rather than get excited about the new feature, Twitter's users seemed irate about a couple of the changes.

The biggest issue that users seemed to have? There were two, actually: The addition of a blue notification dot that appeared with the Moments lightning bolt icon, and the swapping of a star with a heart to indicate a liked post.

First things first. The blue dot signaled unread notifications in the Moments feature, and it changed every time Twitter updated something -- which was a lot. Apparently, this irritated a huge population of Twitter users, who said they disliked seeing an indicator that constantly reappeared. Tweets that reflected the anguish included:

  • "I've never been more annoyed by a small blue dot than this new Twitter 'moments' thing."

  • "It's like Twitter is using the Moments Blue Dot to cull all the people like me with whatever neurosis that can't deal with unread messages."

  • "Nothing irritates me more than when I get on Twitter and have to click on the moments just to get the blue dot to disappear."

So within the week after the Moments introduction and after registering all these protests, Twitter announced that they'd be scrapping blue dot notifications in moments and saying bye-bye to blue.

However, there's no word on the change of the "favorites" icon from star to heart. Guess Twitter has to leave something for those users who dislike change to complain about.

The lesson? Twitter users are a particular lot, and they aren't shy about expressing their dislike of something. Use Twitter smartly and professionally to promote yourself and your business and don't risk alienating your followers.
