Social Media News: August 9th

Matt Shamely In this weekly post we recap the latest social media news, trends and headlines. Sometimes we’ll throw in a few viral videos because after all, it is Friday.

Youtube Founders Launch New Video App - As the buzz dies down over Instagram taking on Vine in the video app world, a new contender enters the fray. Youtube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen launch the new app MixBit. This app allows users to upload video clips and collaborate on them by "remixing" the clips into something new. Videos can be as short as a second or as long as an hour. Currently available only on iOS, Android users must wait until an estimated late September to get on board with the new app.

Robert Plant Joins Social Media - Speaking of celebrities on social media networks, Led Zeppelin's iconic frontman (and solo artist) Robert Plant enters the world of social media. With the launch of his rebranded website, he has also joined Twitter, Instagram, and Google Plus in an effort to connect to more fans. The first 25,000 twitter followers received a free download of one of his live recordings.

In honor of the legend, here is a classic video of Led Zeppelin playing "Bring it On Home," a favorite in the office here at SMD.
